Your User Interface, or UI, is your primary window into the game. Having a screen cluttered with too many giant buttons, resource bars, damage meters, and text windows can distract you during intense combat and lead to avoidable mistakes. This guide explains how to arrange your screen, hide non-essential elements, and set up your layout to play much more efficiently.
The Design Rule: Keep the Center Clear
The most important rule for a clean user interface is to keep the center of your screen clear. This is where your character stands, and you must be able to see ground attacks, boss movements, and environmental hazards immediately without anything blocking your view.
- Move Unit Frames Down: Move your character portrait and your target’s portrait from the top-left corner of the screen to the bottom-center, right under your character. This allows you to track your health and resource levels without looking away from the action.
- Scale Action Bars Down: Once you have memorized your keybinds, you do not need to look at your action bars constantly. Scale your bars down to 80% size and place them at the very bottom of the screen.
- Hide Non-Combat Elements: Set non-essential frames, such as your bag bar, micro-menu, and quest tracker, to automatically hide during combat or only appear when you hover your mouse over them.
Key Interface Addons to Install
To achieve a clean and highly functional layout, I recommend using several key addons to replace the default game frames:
| Addon Name | What It Replaces | Why You Need It |
| ElvUI / Bartender4 | Action Bars & Unit Frames | Cleans up the screen style and allows you to move and scale every single frame. |
| Details! | Damage and Healing Meters | Positioned in the bottom-right corner to analyze your combat data after a fight. |
| Plater Nameplates | Default health bars above enemy heads | Makes it easy to see which enemy is casting a spell and highlights priority targets. |
| WeakAuras | Class resource and buff trackers | Displays clean, custom icons directly under your character to track major cooldowns. |
Optimizing Enemy Nameplates for Combat
Nameplates are the health bars that appear directly above the heads of enemies. In dungeons and raids, having clear nameplates is critical for target selection and interrupting dangerous spells.
- Show Castbars Clearly: Ensure your nameplates display enemy casting progress in a bright, obvious color. If an enemy is casting an interruptible spell, the bar should flash to alert you immediately.
- Filter Minor Enemies: Turn off nameplates for minor, low-health minions that do not have important abilities. This cleans up the screen when fighting large groups of enemies.
- Target Highlighting: Set the nameplate of your current target to be slightly larger than the others, making it easy to keep track of your focus during chaotic fights.
